- ╚■{To top of HELP} - [LEFT ARROW] twice from any Main Menu.
- ╚■{Go to Next page} - Press [N]. This is the best way to move

- ╚■{Go to top of the HELP File} - Move the cursor to any

- The last line will always be blank. This is why pressing [LEFT
- ARROW] twice from any Main Menu will go to top of the HELP file.
- ╚■{Quit HELP screen} - [RIGHT ARROW] or [ESC] or [RETURN].
- ╚■{Find text in HELP file} - Press [F]. A portion of the line

- [RETURN] to find that text, or you can edit the Input box before
- pressing [RETURN] to find any text of your choice. See HELP on
- Input Box for directions on how to use the Input Box. Since it
- takes about 20 seconds to find text that is at the end of the

- ╚■{Go to Index} - Press [N][I]. The key stroke [N][I] will
- always take you to Index1. You can then press [N] to move
- through several other index screens by pressing [N]. The HELP
- system is mostly intended for you to get help from the menus.
- LaserMate400's HELP system is very fast for this type of help
- because it uses the indexed file LM400.IDX. However, you can
- find any text in the HELP file by using the FIND. Finding text
- this way is slow because the file itself is searched. Once in
- one of the index screen, simply move the cursor to the item you
- want to find and press [F]. An Input Box will appear with the
- item displayed at the prompt. Press [RETURN] and the search will
- begin. You can quit the search any time by pressing [ESC]. If
- the text is found, it will be in the first line when the search
- stop. To find the next occurrence, press [A]. To see the entire
- screen press [B].

- As noted above, the first six lines of a HELP screen are
- actually options lines. You can see six letters in the title

- while the cursor is on one of these lines will execute one of

- 5.0 Program Description
- ═══════════════════════
- LaserMate400 is a Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) program
- that gives you complete control over your laser printer. That
- means that LaserMate400 loads up into your computer memory and
- stay there while you run your application program. Once
- LaserMate400 is loaded, you activate it with a single key stroke
- (F10). Although it is written specifically for the OKIDATA OL400
- printer, it can also provide control of other Hewlett-Packard
- LaserJet Series II compatible laser printers. Your laser printer
- has a great deal of capability that you will never be able to
- use unless you are a programmer or unless you are using an
- application program that takes over control of these features.
- LaserMate400 lets to use all of your laser printer power at the
- DOS prompt and while running your applications through easy to
- use Popup Selection Menus and Input Boxes. A quick tutorial of
- how to use LaserMate400 Follows:

- 6.0 How to run LaserMate400.
- ═══════════════════════════
- To load LaserMate400 as a TSR popup program, you must
- include a parameter (r = any character) on
- the command line when you load the program as below:
-
- LM400 /r
-
- To run LaserMate400 as a NON-TSR program enter:
-
- LM400
-
- Loading LaserMate400 as a NON-TSR is useful when used with
- application programs that allow temporary exit to DOS or when
- you just want to simply set up the printer for an application
- that is too large to have LaserMate400 in memory while it runs
- or one that will not require any adjustment to the printer
- settings after the application is running.

- 7.0 LaserMate400 Parts.
- ═════════════════════════
- LaserMate400 is made up of three Popup Main Menus, many
- Popup Selection Menus and many Popup Input Boxes. All menus and
- boxes give good clues on what you need to do to make your laser
- printer respond. Moving around the Menus and Boxes are simple
- and natural. The following technique is common to all menus.
- ╚■{Activate LaserMate400 Main Menu 1} - Press the hot key. The
- default F10. However you can change this to avoid conflict with
- your applications. The changed hot key can be saved in a Setting
- File along with all other LaserMate400 settings to be load
- later. This keeps you from having to remember the different
- printer setup for all of your applications.

- Entering any of the wildcard characters combinations ([*], [*.],
- [.*], [*.*] or [?]) anywhere in the Input Box will cause the
- Directory Box to appear listing the files and sub-directories
- in the specified path that match the wild card characters.
- The files will be listed in lowercase and sub-directories will
- be listed in uppercase and followed by a backslash (\). The

- turn. Note that the top line of the Menus and Boxes always
- provide you with more information, help and prompts on what your
- next step should be. The lines inside some of the Selection

- LaserMate400 comes with some required files and example files.
- LM400.HLP and LM400.IDX should be in the default HELP directory.
- LM400.FNT should be in the default FONTS directory. LM400.SET
- should be in the default SETTINGS directory. While LaserMate400
- will function without these files, they help LaserMate400 locate
- the default directories. It is also helpful but not necessary
- if you put the default files in the "PATH" line of your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file. LaserMate400 come with example font and
- settings files end with {.FNT} and {.SET} for learning only.

- ╚═════════════════════════════╝ file. You can press [N] to step
- through the HELP file. Since the HELP file screens are in the
- same order as the three Main Menus, this would be a good way to
- learn how to use LaserMate400. The HELP file is an ASCII file
- which can be edited with a ASCII capable word processor.
- However, you should only do so after you are sure you have a
- backup of the original file. If you do edit the HELP file you
- should make sure you execute the Reindex Help File option after
- you finish. Failure to do so will cause the HELP function to be
- slow. There are only a few rules the HELP file must follow: (1)
- must be pure ASCII file, (2) Must end with !!EOF!! (lower case),
- (3) screen area must be limited to less than 19 lines, (4) last
- line must be !!END!! (lower case), (5) must have file name of
- LM400.HLP, (6) text lines must be less than 66 characters. Line
- longer than the limit will cause LaserMate400 to malfunction.
